I've been thinking lately about how I want to capture the CERN that I have experienced for the past two years. This photograph is one that will definitely go into that photo essay. Most of what is broadcast about CERN is not what I have experienced, how could it be. In the press and on the minds of scientists is the science, the experiment halls and the instruments themselves. But these are not places you work. Science happens mostly in our heads, and in our computers. The experiment halls and the instruments are totally off limits most of the time due to radiation safety issues. What remains is our offices and the above ground campus of CERN. That will be the focus of my essay. I'm not sure when it will be completed, but it's something that I very much want to do.

Today was a semi-holiday, such is life in science. Good Friday is a CERN holiday, but I had to come in and do some work anyway. After I finished it, I still had some time to kill before going home, so I took a photowalk around the west middle of the Meyrin site. This wasn't my only take of the day, far from it. I think many good things will come from this day.

This would be an excellent opportunity to do a human interest post, a la Jeffrey Friedl (one of my blogging and photographic inspirations). I even have some of the required photographs. A friend of Alessandra's came to visit for the weekend, and we had a great time doodling around the region, showing him some of the closer sites. Unfortunately, I'm too buried to put the kind of effort in to do such a post right now.

The second picture is from the car, so the positioning isn't optimal. I would have liked to be a little more to the right, but I like the bundled up commuter, so I take what I get.
Also, I was playing around with 50mm on my zoom lens, thinking harder about what my next lens choice will be. I can only really think of a couple more that I think I woud want, ever, so I was "playing with one of them". I really like the perspective I get with the 50mm, even on DX. Also, I'm thinking of doing some portraiture of my family when I'm back home next. So the 50 might be next. Honestly the other lens I'm contemplating is a super wide angle one, but it's screw focus, so I'll have to wait for the old body upgrade for that. I think a 135mm old manual lens would be great, and inexpensive too. I don't have anything with that kind of reach currently, so when I decide to get that it'll just be a surprise all around.
Another thing that motivated this was that I realized how useful a narrow depth of field really is, and how frustrating it can be when you can't get it. My zoom dens can't get to wide, f/5.6 at 50mm, which doesn't offer too narrow of a depth of field. The DoF really is one of knobs to turn on the isolation plane of photography, so I think I want to be able to really use it.

The place that I work is pretty monochrome, or just tri-tone. There is the institutional blue color, the institutional red color, and then a couple of white/off white/tans that are allowed. There is another color blue, but it could easily be just a faded version of institutional blue. Of course, there is also the ubiquitous "exterior decay" color, that's just everywhere. Consequently, the only real colors, especially in winter, are the cars. And when you really look at it, there aren't that many colored cars here either.

This is one of the walls in the engineering hall next to my building, or maybe it's just a machine shop. It can be hard to tell. This room has both machining equipment and science equipment. I suspect it is a dedicated suport hall for one of the rings. Outside there are many brown (painted) gas bottles The gas bottles are next to the next building over (pictures another time). It's the same room that the pictures in this post were taken in.

Two things come to mind in these pictures.
- Taking pictures from up high is interesting.
- Taking pictures of people feels a bit creepy to me.
I think I'll only comment on the first one today. The second I'll save for later.

I haven't gotten to take pictures from up high in an urban (or really, an industrial) setting before. As usual, I struggle with the chaos of these settings, though I usually find something that I would like to make a picture out of. Being up high makes it for a different perspective. I usually want a longer lens, but wide offers some interesting ideas too.
